ERP teams keep asking: Who owns the data?
One of the biggest roadblocks I see in global ERP programs—especially during Phase 0—is confusion around data ownership and governance.
You’ve got global data domains (like customer or product master) spanning multiple regions and local teams who either assume they own it—or aren’t sure they’re even allowed to decide.
That’s when things get messy. And in my experience, it’s one of the fastest ways to stall momentum.
🛠️ RASCI for Data Domain Governance – Why it works
Over the years, I’ve found the RASCI model to be one of the most effective tools for creating clarity across diverse teams in D365 F&O implementations (or any ERP).
It’s especially valuable when multiple stakeholders are touching the same data—and nobody’s quite sure who has the final say.
Here’s how I’ve seen it work in practice:
🔹 Responsible (R): Doing the work (cleansing, validating, migrating)
🔹 Accountable (A): Owning the data and making final decisions
🔹 Support (S): Assisting with execution
🔹 Consulted (C): Providing input (SMEs, QA, process owners)
🔹 Informed (I): Staying in the loop
💡 Tip from the field:
Don’t leave ownership vague. Assign real names or teams—global, local, IT, business, compliance and review it regularly. Especially in complex programs with shared responsibilities and evolving scope.
RASCI isn’t just a document—it’s a structured conversation that surfaces assumptions early, and in Phase 0, those conversations are where future friction gets resolved before it impacts timelines.
ERP success isn’t only about systems and processes.
It’s about people knowing their role and being empowered to play it well.
